Midnight Ledger vs Zoho Books for UAE small businesses

Zoho Books is the most widely used accounting product among UAE small businesses, and for good reason. Midnight Ledger is newer, narrower and built only for the UAE. This page sets out where each is stronger so you can pick the one that fits.

The short version

  • Zoho Books: Choose Zoho Books if you need inventory, projects, a mobile app, live bank feeds, or you already run the wider Zoho suite and want everything under one login.
  • Midnight Ledger: Choose Midnight Ledger if you are a services or trading business that wants VAT, corporate tax and WPS payroll handled in one simple product, with AI reading your receipts, and you would rather not learn an accounting package.

Where Zoho Books is stronger

Zoho Books has been in the UAE market since VAT began and is FTA-accredited. It has live bank feeds for the main UAE banks, a mobile app, inventory, project time tracking, a client portal, hundreds of integrations and an ecosystem of Zoho CRM, Zoho Expense and Zoho Payroll that all talk to each other. If your business has stock, jobs to track, or a sales team living in a CRM, Zoho Books is the safer choice today.

Where Midnight Ledger is stronger

Midnight Ledger only does UAE bookkeeping, so the things a UAE small business actually has to file are the product rather than modules. The VAT return is the VAT 201 form itself, filled as you post. Corporate tax headroom, the AED 375,000 band and the AED 3 million Small Business Relief cap are on the dashboard. Payroll with WPS SIF files and gratuity is included rather than sold separately. Receipts are read by AI as standard, and the interface is designed for an owner who does not know what a journal is.

It also has a free plan that does not expire, a 14-day trial of Pro with no card, and it exports everything as CSV and as the FTA Audit File, so trying it costs nothing and leaving is painless.

What Midnight Ledger does not do yet

  • No live bank feeds (CSV import instead).
  • No inventory, projects or time tracking.
  • No native mobile app, though the web app installs to your phone home screen.
  • It is a young product: features are still being added and changed. Keep your exports.

Switching

Export contacts, the chart of accounts and a closing trial balance from Zoho Books and upload them as they come: Midnight Ledger recognises the column names Zoho prints, shows you line by line what each file will do, and writes nothing until you confirm. The practical approach is to start at the beginning of a VAT period and run both for one period before turning the old one off.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zoho Books FTA approved?

Yes. Zoho Books is on the FTA list of accredited tax accounting software. Midnight Ledger produces the same VAT 201 figures and FAF export but is not yet on the accreditation list.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many people do for one period while switching. Do not run both permanently: pick one system of record.
