Comparison

Midnight Ledger vs QuickBooks Online for UAE small businesses

QuickBooks Online is the accounting product most people have heard of, and its UAE edition handles VAT well. Midnight Ledger is a UAE-only product with a narrower scope and a simpler surface. Here is how they line up for a small business in the Emirates.

The short version

  • QuickBooks Online: Choose QuickBooks Online if your accountant already works in it, you need its app marketplace and bank feeds, or you sell products and need inventory.
  • Midnight Ledger: Choose Midnight Ledger if you want VAT, corporate tax and UAE payroll in one place, prefer AI to do the data entry, and want a tool that assumes you are a business owner rather than a bookkeeper.

Where QuickBooks Online is stronger

QuickBooks has the largest accountant community in the world and a UAE edition that files a compliant VAT 201. Its bank feeds, mobile app, receipt capture, invoicing customisation and app marketplace are mature. If your accountant asks for QuickBooks access, or you run a product business that needs inventory and purchase orders, it is a proven choice.

Where Midnight Ledger is stronger

QuickBooks does not do UAE payroll, so WPS files, gratuity and payslips end up in a spreadsheet or another subscription. It has no corporate tax view, so the AED 375,000 band and Small Business Relief are something you work out at year end. Midnight Ledger includes both, along with AI receipt extraction, a VAT return laid out exactly like the FTA form, and the FTA Audit File export. It is built for the UAE owner-operator rather than adapted for them.

It is also cheaper to run: a free plan for the smallest books, and Pro at AED 99 a month per company with every seat included, priced in dirhams rather than dollars.

What Midnight Ledger does not do yet

  • No live bank feeds (CSV import instead).
  • No inventory or purchase orders.
  • No native mobile app, though the web app installs to your phone home screen.
  • No third-party app marketplace.
  • It is a young product, and newer than the alternatives here.

Switching

Export your customer, supplier, chart of accounts and trial balance reports from QuickBooks as CSV and upload them unchanged: the importer recognises the column names QuickBooks prints and shows you what each file will do before writing anything. Start at the beginning of a VAT period and run both in parallel for that period before switching QuickBooks off.
