Midnight Ledger vs Xero for UAE small businesses

Xero is a beautifully made global accounting product with a huge app ecosystem. It is sold in the UAE, but it was not built for the UAE, and that shows up in exactly the places a small business here has to be careful. This page lays out the differences.

The short version

  • Xero: Choose Xero if you have an accountant who works in Xero, need its integrations and bank feeds, and are comfortable building your VAT 201 from Xero's tax reports.

Where Xero is stronger

Xero has excellent bank reconciliation, an enormous integration marketplace, a mobile app, Hubdoc for document capture, and advisor tools that accountants love. If you have a Xero-certified accountant or use apps that only integrate with Xero, those are strong reasons to stay.

Where Midnight Ledger is stronger

Xero does not have a UAE-specific edition. There is no VAT 201 report laid out the way the FTA wants it, no emirate split, no FTA Audit File, no corporate tax view and no UAE payroll. Each of those is a spreadsheet, an add-on or an accountant's time. Midnight Ledger produces all of them natively because it was built for the UAE and nowhere else, and it reads receipts with AI as standard.

It is also priced in dirhams rather than dollars, with a free plan for the smallest books and Pro at AED 99 a month, and it exports everything as CSV.

What Midnight Ledger does not do yet

  • No live bank feeds (CSV import instead).
  • No inventory, projects or time tracking.
  • No native mobile app, though the web app installs to your phone home screen.
  • No app marketplace.
  • It is a young product, and newer than the alternatives here.

Switching

Xero exports contacts, the chart of accounts and a trial balance as CSV, and Midnight Ledger reads them as they come, showing you line by line what will happen before anything is written. Import at the start of a VAT period and run both for one period. Most businesses find the VAT return alone is reason enough to finish the switch.

Frequently asked questions

Does Xero produce a UAE VAT 201?

Xero's global edition provides tax rate reports from which the VAT 201 figures can be assembled. It does not produce the form itself or the emirate split. Midnight Ledger mirrors the VAT 201 box for box.

Does Xero do WPS payroll in the UAE?

No. Xero payroll is available only in a handful of countries and the UAE is not one of them.
